Do I Have a Herniated Disc?

  • Do I Have a Herniated Disc?

The vertebrae in your spine have sponge-like discs in between them that allow the spine to move and have flexibility. These discs are the reason you don’t experience pain from bone to bone friction. The round discs are composed of a strong outer layer as well as a soft, gel-like inner center. A herniated disc occurs when the disc’s center breaks through the strong outer layer.

  • What Causes a Herniated Disc?

Age is a common cause of a herniated disc. Other causes include:
    • Degenerative disc disease
    • Obesity
    • Injury or trauma
    • Repetitive movements
    • Continuous heavy lifting
    • Smoking
    • Sedentary lifestyle

  • What Are Common Herniated Disc Symptoms?

Symptoms for herniated disc are dependent on where it’s located in the spine. If the herniated disc is in the lower area of the spine or in the lumbar, you could experience symptoms in the legs or hips. If the herniated disc is in the upper neck area of the spine or in the cervical, you may experience symptoms in your arms. Common symptoms to look out for are:
    • Low back pain
    • Tension in the muscles
    • Weakness in or around the location of the herniated disc
    • Headaches
    • Cramping
    • Tingling or numbness around the area the nerve serves

  • Non-Surgical Treatment Options for Bulging Discs

Non-surgical treatment options are the first course of action in treating herniated discs. Treatments can include:
    • Prescription medication or over-the-counter medicine
    • Muscle relaxers
    • Heat/cold therapy
    • Cortisone injections
    • Stretching exercises
    • Modification to activities

  • Robotic Surgical Treatments for Bulging Discs

Robotic surgery allows the surgeon to pinpoint and hone in on the exact point of pain or injury. With an exact location of the herniated disc, a much smaller incision is created to remove the part of the disc that’s causing pain or pressure.

As with any spinal condition, it’s important to seek medical advice and treatment before the condition becomes too serious. Whether non-surgical or surgical treatment, the path to a pain-free life is waiting for you. Find the right treatment for you with our treatment finder assessment.
