Bariatrics

Obesity is a chronic disease, a disease that we recognize as not always the result of a lack of discipline. Many patients with obesity have tried losing weight on their own, with lifestyle changes like diet and exercise. Some have had success with these lifestyle changes, only to regain the weight, but often, patients have little to no success with diet and exercise alone. Bariatric surgery, or weight loss surgery, is the most effective method of sustainable, long-term weight loss, compared to methods like medications, diet, and exercise.

Obesity can threaten your overall health, and can decrease and diminish your quality and length of life. You have a higher risk of developing other conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, cancers, and more. Weight loss can curb some of these obesity-related risks to your health, and bariatric surgery can play an important part in the process.

Award-Winning Bariatric Care

The Institute for Robotic Surgery has received six Center of Excellence designations in total from the Surgical Review Corporation, including Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery. This award reflects our commitment and ability to deliver safe and high quality bariatric surgical care with successful, long-term outcomes.

Are you a candidate for weight loss surgery?

Many patients who could benefit from bariatric surgery don’t know if surgery is right for them. If you answer yes to these questions, you may be a candidate.

  • Do you have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more, or a BMI of 35 or more with a serious health problem linked to obesity, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, or sleep apnea?
  • Have you tried diet and exercise programs with little or no success?

da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgical System

Many bariatric procedures, including gastric sleeve or gastric bypass surgery, can be performed using the da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgical System. The system delivers high definition views, giving your surgeon a crystal-clear view of the surgical area, magnified 10 times what the human eye sees. Its finger-like instruments bend and rotate like a human hand, but with an even greater range of motion. By incorporating this technology into bariatric surgery, procedures are less invasive, resulting in lower complication rates, shorter hospital stays, and quicker recoveries.
