Do I Have a Degenerative Disc Disease?

What is Degenerative Disc Disease?

Degenerative disc disease occurs from spinal discs breaking down from everyday wear-and-tear as you get older. The spinal discs are located between the vertebrae of the spine and act as shock absorbers. Spinal discs allow you to move your neck, back, flex, as well as bend and turn your body, however, as discs degenerate, it can result in pain and stiffness in the back and neck.

What Causes Degenerative Disc Disease?

As you age, the discs in your spinal discs become less sponge-like with wear-and-tear, which results in less flexibility. Discs aren’t able to absorb shock which results in spinal discs losing fluid and drying out. Because of this, stress is put on the vertebrae and the spine becomes less stable due to the loss of cushion in between the vertebrae.

What Are Common Degenerative Disc Disease Symptoms?

Disc degeneration disease can range from mild to severe pain and symptoms. Common symptoms include:

  • Sharp or intense pain when bending, sitting, twisting, or walking
  • Continual pain
  • Mild to severe discomfort
  • Weakness and numbness
  • Tingling
  • Lack of bowel control

If you think you are experiencing the symptoms of degenerative disc disease, use our pain assessment tool to start your diagnosis.

How Is Degenerative Disc Disease Treated?

Non-Surgical Treatment Options for Degenerative Disc Disease

Due to degenerative disc disease occurring later in age, conservative, non-surgical treatment is the first approach to treating pain and strengthening related muscles. This can include:
  • A regimen for pain medication
  • Physical therapy
  • Stretching regimen
  • Daily activities modification
  • Anti-inflammatory medication
  • Hot/Cold therapy

Robotic Surgical Treatments for Degenerative Disc Disease

If surgery is needed to correct degenerative disc disease, robotic surgery is the safest option. When it comes to surgery, degenerative disc disease is usually treated through a spinal fusion where the vertebrae are fused together from screws and bone grafts. Robotic surgical treatments provide more accurate outcomes and reduce recovery time through their precision and advanced technology. By using robotic-assisted treatments, there are fewer incisions and minimal dissection needed.

As with any spine condition, it’s important to seek medical advice and treatment before it becomes too serious. Whether non-surgical or surgical treatment, the path to a pain-free life waiting is for you. Find the right treatment for you with our treatment finder assessment.
