Spine Surgeon (Orthopedic)

The American Health Council welcomed Alexandra Carrer, BA, BS, MD, FAAOS as “Best in Medicine” for her outstanding contributions to the medical field. An orthopaedic spine surgeon in New Jersey., Dr. Carrer performs intricate surgical procedures and provides optimal patient care. While she has been in practice in New Jersey for over two years, she spent 5 years in practice in New York City treating a wide variety of patients and expanding skills in spine surgery and involvement in healthcare industry innovative technologies.

Dr. Carrer’s interest in orthopaedic surgery began at a young age after sustaining sports-related injuries as an athlete and martial artist. Her participation in both sports gave her an insight as to the importance of the rehabilitative process after surgical procedures and alternative ways to treat conditions. Her maternal grandmother further influenced Dr. Carrer to pursue a career in orthopaedic spine surgery as she suffered from severe scoliosis. She eventually enrolled at SUNY Downstate Medical Center and earned a medical degree in 2006. She completed an orthopaedic surgery residency at the medical center and later, a spine fellowship at the University of California San Francisco.

Currently, Dr. Carrer performs patient’s evaluations and treatments, research and medical student and resident education. Additionally, she performs orthopaedic spine procedures at a Level I trauma center. Throughout her successful career, Dr. Carrer has published several peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, as well as delivered speeches and presentations at international conferences. To contribute her knowledge as well as remain updated on medical trends, Dr. Carrer is a member of several professional associations, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, AOSpine (an international community of spine surgeons), the Society of Lateral Access Surgery and the New York County Medical Society. Additionally, she contributes funds to various charitable organizations, including the American Red Cross, the ASPCA and Save the Children and volunteers at her local animal shelter.

In her free time, she enjoys maintaining an active lifestyle by surfing, snowboarding, ballroom dancing and practicing martial arts. She enjoys going to the cinema, reading literature, visiting the opera house and traveling. She devotes her personal time to advancing healthcare development and access in underserved areas and developing countries. Dr. Carrer is fluent in Spanish and French, and conversational in Italian. With a successful career at hand — one that she attributes to her compassion, perseverance, humility and honesty — Dr. Carrer plans to continue to build excellent orthopaedic and spine care in New Jersey and New York.
